Love in the Time of Dementia: an Aboriginal dementia education story
Client: Carpentaria Disability Services
A health care story of love and living with dementia.
-
Dementia can be difficult to explain without reducing the experience to symptoms and clinical information.
Love in the Time of Dementia explores the condition through the story of an Aboriginal man caring for his wife as memory loss, wandering and disrupted sleep begin to change their lives together.
The challenge was to build dementia awareness while preserving the love, humour and shared history at the heart of their relationship.
-
The film combines culturally grounded storytelling with accessible health education.
A first-person narrator recalls the couple meeting, falling in love and raising a family before describing the everyday realities of caring for someone with dementia.
Hand-drawn animation brings warmth and cultural context to the story. Simple visual metaphors—including plaques disrupting pathways in the brain—help explain dementia without interrupting the emotional journey.
-
The result is a warm and engaging dementia education animation told through love, family and lived experience.
It acknowledges the challenges faced by carers while honouring the enduring connection between two people who have shared a lifetime.
