Environmental Governance Series

Client: Northern Land Council

Turning complex environmental policy into visual communication people can understand.

  • Environmental approval processes are complex.

For Aboriginal landowners in Northern Australia, decisions about land clearing, water extraction and floodplain harvesting involve navigating environmental regulation, cultural responsibilities and long-term land management.

The Northern Land Council needed a way to clearly explain these environmental approval processes so Traditional Owners and community stakeholders could participate in informed discussions and decision-making. Written documents and technical explanations alone were not enough to communicate how the processes work.

  • Educational Animations produced a series of animated explainer videos covering three environmental approval processes:

    • Pastoral Land Clearing
    • Water Extraction Licences
    • Wet Season Floodplain Harvesting

Each video breaks down the steps involved in the approval process, showing:

    • who is involved in decision-making
    • what environmental factors are assessed
    • how Traditional Owners are consulted
    • how different outcomes affect land and water systems

Animation allowed complex regulatory processes to be communicated visually and clearly, supporting community consultation and engagement.

  • The videos are now used by the Northern Land Council as part of their environmental communication and consultation resources.

The project demonstrates how animation can support environmental governance, community consultation, and knowledge translation for complex policy and regulatory systems.

By turning dense environmental information into clear visual explanations, the series helps communities better understand how decisions about land and water are made.
