Helping communities understand the allure and dangers of online gambling.
-
Online gambling is increasingly reaching people through mobile phones, often disguised as harmless games or opportunities to win money.
Many people are unaware that online pokies are illegal in Australia, and that these platforms are frequently operated by criminal organisations overseas. The combination of constant phone notifications, persuasive design and low awareness creates a high risk of financial harm for individuals and families.
Communicating this risk requires more than written information. The message needs to be immediate, memorable and grounded in everyday experience.
-
Educational Animations developed a story-driven song and animation built around a familiar trigger — the “beep beep buzz” of a phone notification.
The narrative draws audiences into a recognisable moment of temptation, showing how quickly curiosity can lead to loss. Through rhythm, repetition and simple language, the animation communicates key ideas:
online gambling platforms are illegal in Australia
operators are often overseas criminals
money lost is unlikely to be recovered
The story moves from temptation to consequence, before offering clear alternatives — ignore the alerts, disconnect from the apps, and focus on family, community and real-world activities.
A short follow-up explainer reinforces the message in Yolŋu Matha with practical actions such as turning off notifications, ignoring messages and not engaging with gambling apps.
-
The project provides an engaging resource to raise awareness about online gambling risks and scams.
Designed for use in financial literacy workshops, and for broadcast across First Nations TV and social media channels, the piece is built to reach audiences in multiple contexts.By combining storytelling, music and practical guidance, the animation helps audiences:
recognise online gambling as a scam and legal risk
understand how manipulation and temptation work
take simple steps to protect their money and wellbeing
The song format makes the message easy to remember and share, supporting conversations within families, communities, and facilitated learning environments.
